Biodiversity

A commitment that brings together production and conservation

For Aperam BioEnergia, biodiversity is an essential and non-negotiable value. Our actions go beyond legal obligations, demonstrating a true commitment to environmental conservation, combining sustainability and responsible production throughout our forestry operations. We believe that protecting biodiversity means protecting the very essence of life, ensuring a balanced and healthy future for current and future generations.

Protected Areas and Ecological Corridors

We preserve over 33% of our total area, ensuring crucial spaces for conserving local fauna and flora. Our strategy includes creating ecological corridors—vegetation strips that connect forest fragments, allowing wildlife to move freely and facilitating the natural dispersion of seeds. These corridors account for approximately 9% of the company’s total area.

These actions have proven results: our reserves today are recognized for their high species diversity and ecological maturity, standing out in Brazil’s environmental landscape.

Ecological Restoration of Degraded Areas

Aperam BioEnergia is actively engaged in restoring degraded lands, totaling more than 200 hectares currently restored using innovative and sustainable methods.

Our restoration technique includes the use of native Cerrado species and organic materials from our own forestry activities, ensuring effective ecological recovery officially recognized with the “SEMAD Recommends” seal.

Fauna Monitoring

Our ongoing biodiversity monitoring program currently records 277 bird species and 34 mammal species. Among them are emblematic and endangered species such as the maned wolf, puma, toco toucan, and giant anteater.

Monitoring is conducted by specialists, enabling systematic data collection that guides our decisions and ensures that operational practices directly contribute to conserving these important animal representatives.

Flora Monitoring

Aperam BioEnergia currently preserves 33% of its areas, with a high conservation level that resulted in the identification of 3 High Conservation Value Areas (HCVA). These areas have significant environmental value, characterized by rich diversity, ecosystem complexity, landscape mosaics, and important ecosystem services.

Our reserve areas show a high-level of preservation and conservation, reaching a Shannon diversity index of 3.82.

Environmental Education and Awareness

Through the “Sempre Verde” program, we deliver knowledge about biodiversity and environmental conservation directly to local communities and schools in the region. This program has already impacted thousands of people through the distribution of native seedlings, educational lectures, ecological blitzes, cultural events, and sports activities in direct contact with nature.

We understand that biodiversity preservation depends on direct and active community involvement.

Strategic Water Resource Management

Water is life—and at Aperam BioEnergia, we protect springs and water bodies within our areas. To do so, we use simple yet effective techniques such as constructing micro-dams (“barraginhas”)—small structures that retain rainwater, recharging aquifers and maintaining regional water balance, benefiting fauna, flora, and local communities.

Ongoing Commitment to Sustainable Development Goals

Aperam BioEnergia’s biodiversity actions are aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially those related to terrestrial ecosystems, climate action, responsible water management, and sustainable consumption and production.

Our environmental commitment reinforces our active contribution to achieving the global targets set by the 2030 Agenda.

Biodiversity Policy and Future Goals

In 2025, we solidified our commitment with the publication of the Aperam BioEnergia Biodiversity Policy—strengthening our responsibility to integrate production with sustainable development and biodiversity conservation.
