The Kyoto Protocol
The activities of Aperam BioEnergia are also oriented to and comply with the Kyoto Protocol, an international treaty in effect since 2005 that specifies reduction goals for greenhouse gas emissions, as well as with the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). Energy efficiency in carbonization processes and the use of planted biomass as a renewable energy source are currently accepted concepts for emission reduction projects.
Aperam BioEnergia’s eucalypt forests, in constant growth, retain carbon dioxide (CO2) through photosynthesis. For each ton of pig iron produced with charcoal, there’s a minimum environmental gain of three tons of CO2 in comparison with the use of non-renewable biomass or fossil fuels.
